Your service, explained
What does hard drive degaussing include?
Degaussing uses a strong magnetic field to disrupt data recorded on compatible magnetic media. It does not sanitize SSDs, NVMe drives, flash memory, or optical discs. The equipment must be suitable for the specific media, and degaussed hard drives should not be planned for reuse.
Compatible magnetic hard disk drives and magnetic backup media, subject to media and equipment compatibility review. Separate SSDs, hybrid drives, flash devices, and optical media.
Check compatibility
Identify magnetic HDDs and tapes by model. Degausser capability must match the media; appearance alone does not establish compatibility.
Choose the outcome
Degaussing is different from software wiping and physical shredding. Do not choose it for an SSD or assume the drive will remain usable.
Record the disposition
Agree on serial-number tracking, processing records, and what happens to the media afterward, including any additional destruction and recycling.

Choose your reporting level
Tracked or non-tracked service
Non-tracked option
Choose the non-tracked pricing option when your project does not require the added tracking level. The Certificate of Destruction lists the processed items; confirm the identification detail with your quote.
Tracked option
Tracking is available at additional cost. Specify serial-number, asset-tag, and reconciliation requirements before pickup so the quote includes the tracking and reporting level your organization needs.
Certificate of Destruction
Liberty lists processed items on the certificate. Agree on the reporting detail for your selected option, including how wiping results or processing exceptions will be documented.
Degaussing and wiping are currently performed off-site. Collection, approved drop-off, and the processing schedule are arranged with your quote.
Choose by media and outcome
Wiping, degaussing, or shredding?
| Method | When to discuss it | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Wiping | Eligible working drives proposed for reuse | Media-specific sanitization and verification; confirm the method and exception handling. |
| Degaussing | Compatible magnetic HDDs and backup media | Not suitable for SSDs or flash. Confirm compatibility; do not plan HDD reuse. |
| Physical shredding | Devices selected for destruction | Physical destruction makes the device unavailable for reuse; agree on media-specific processing and records. |
Identify the media before selecting a method. Review your organization’s required sanitization outcome with our team. NIST’s media-sanitization guidance is a planning reference, not a certification of Liberty’s services.
Before you book
A clear path from inventory to records
Share your inventory
List devices, installed drives, quantities, location, and access. Include the outcome you want: return, reuse, or destruction.
Confirm the quote
Review data methods, labor responsibilities, transport, schedule, and the records included.
Authorize the work
Back up required data, approve release, and identify anything that must remain in service or under your control.
Reconcile the results
Match the equipment and media released to the agreed processing records. Resolve exceptions before approving reuse.

Questions & answers
What is hard drive degaussing?
Degaussing uses a strong magnetic field to disrupt data recorded on compatible magnetic media. It does not sanitize SSDs, NVMe drives, flash memory, or optical discs. The equipment must be suitable for the specific media, and degaussed hard drives should not be planned for reuse.
Does Liberty E-Waste offer hard drive degaussing in Washington and Idaho?
Yes. Liberty E-Waste offers hard drive degaussing for customers in Washington and Idaho. Share your inventory, address, and desired outcome for a project-specific quote and confirmed arrangements.
What equipment can I include?
Compatible magnetic hard disk drives and magnetic backup media, subject to media and equipment compatibility review. Separate SSDs, hybrid drives, flash devices, and optical media.
Does degaussing work on SSDs or NVMe drives?
No. SSDs, NVMe drives, USB flash devices, and other flash storage are not sanitized by degaussing. Identify these devices separately so an appropriate sanitization or destruction method can be selected.
Can a degaussed hard drive be reused?
Do not plan to reuse a degaussed hard drive. The process can damage the information needed for it to operate. If reuse is your goal, ask about secure wiping for an eligible working drive instead.
Is degaussing the same as shredding?
No. Degaussing applies a magnetic field to compatible media; shredding physically breaks up the device. Your media type and required outcome determine which method, or combination, belongs in the project.
Can you process backup tapes or failed HDDs?
Provide the exact media type and model for compatibility review. A failed magnetic HDD or a tape may be considered for degaussing only when the equipment and process are suitable; failure to operate is not proof that data is gone.
Is degaussing automatically NIST-certified destruction?
No. NIST publishes media-sanitization guidance; it does not certify Liberty’s service. Degaussing is not the same as physical destruction, and suitability depends on the specific magnetic media and the processing equipment.
Can I arrange pickup or bring equipment to Liberty?
Discuss pickup at your site or intake through a Liberty location in Lynnwood, Tacoma, or Meridian. Confirm the equipment, quantity, access, acceptance, and processing arrangements before transporting a load. A city service page is not a separate storefront.
Can you accept equipment that still contains drives?
Yes. Tell Liberty which devices still contain storage and whether your team will remove any drives first. Keep a separate list of media retained by your organization so the processing scope and Certificate of Destruction reflect the equipment released.
Are degaussing and wiping available on-site?
No. Degaussing and wiping are currently off-site services. Liberty offers mobile on-site hard drive shredding as a separate destruction option. Identify your required method and location before equipment is released.
What is the difference between tracked and non-tracked service?
Liberty offers tracked and non-tracked pricing options. Tracking costs more because it adds tracking and reporting work. Choose the level of item identification and reporting you need when requesting the quote; confirm serial-number and asset-tag requirements before release.
Will we receive a Certificate of Destruction?
Yes. Liberty provides a Certificate of Destruction listing the processed items. The item identification and reporting detail should match the tracked or non-tracked option selected in your quote. For wiping, confirm how the method, results, and any exceptions will be recorded.
How much will the service cost?
Pricing depends on equipment and drive counts, the chosen data method, removal labor, access, transport, tracking, and reporting. Send an inventory and photos of the equipment and access route for a project-specific estimate; no fixed minimum or per-drive price is implied here.
What should we do before service?
List the media manufacturer, model, type, quantity, and any handling restrictions. Keep magnetic media separate from SSDs and other non-magnetic storage. Approve backups and release before processing.
Will this meet our security or compliance requirements?
Tell Liberty which policy, contract, sanitization outcome, and evidence your organization requires. Agree on the media-specific method and documentation before release. Choosing a recycling service alone does not establish compliance or authorize disposal of records under a hold.
